Borah Would Force Senate to Stay In Session All Night
In Order to Reach Vote on Resolution for Direct Election of Senators
(By Associated Press)
WASHINGTON DC Feb 14,-
As the result of many conferences, the friends of the resolution for the direct election of senators determined today to force action. Senator Borah voiced the purpose in a formal notice that Thursday he would ask the senate to sit until a vote was reached. If this is persisted in, it may be an all night session. They mean to test the endurance of the friends and opponents of the measure either by continuous speaking by the opposition or a filibuster.
On the other hand the supporters will be required to hold a quorum. The popular electionists are more sanguine of success than ever. Their renewed hope is due to a canvass of the democratic side which convinces them that in spite of the Sutherland amendment, many democrats will vote for it.
The amendment prevails for the ultimate federal control of popular election of senators. Borah's colleague, Heyburn, made it evident that he would press the opposition.
